White nights

It’s midsummer in the Shetland Islands, the time of the white nights, when birds sing at midnight and the sun never sets. Artist Bella Sinclair throws an elaborate party to launch an exhibition of her work at The Herring House, a gallery on the beach.

The party ends in farce when one the guests, a mysterious Englishman, bursts into tears and claims not to know who he is or where he’s come from. The following day the Englishman is found hanging from a rafter, and Detective Jimmy Perez is convinced that the man has been murdered. He is reinforced in this belief when Roddy, Bella’s musician nephew, is murdered, too.

But the detective’s relationship with Fran Hunter may have clouded his judgment, for this is a crazy time of the year when night blurs into day and nothing is quite as it seems.

Den här över 200 år gamla boken behöver ingen närmare presentation. Första versionen skrevs 1797. Den publicerades 1813.
BBC´s serie från 1995 följer boken väldigt väl, märkte jag, men en del saker blev lite tydligare i boken.

Boken jag läste hade inte det här omslaget, men jag valde det jag tyckte var snyggast!

Svart som natten

Det är en kall januarimorgon och staden Lerwick på Shetlandsöarna ligger under ett djupt täcke av snö. Korparna seglar framöver den ensamståendemamman Fran Hunter som just har lämnat sin dotter i skolan och är på väg hemåt när hennes blick plötsligt dras till den frusna marken och ett konstigt bylte som ligger i snön. Det visar sig vara en ung kvinna, strypt med sin egen halsduk. Fran känner genast igen henne som grannflickan Catherine Ross.
Shetlandspolisen kallar genast på förstärkning från Skottland. Bland invånarna sprids nyheten om mordet blixtsnabbt och rykten om att stadens ensling Magnus Tait är inblandad i mordet börjar florera. När kommissarie Jimmy Perez ignorerar ryktena och istället börjar kartlägga vad som egentligen hänt sprider sig misstankarna vidare och lägger sig som en skugga över den lilla staden. Grannarna kastar illvilliga blickar på varandra och för första gången låser man sin ytterdörr. Alla känner alla - men en av dem är en mördare. Vem?

Jag hade den här boken hemma på svenska. Därav att jag inte har läst den på engelska. Språket kändes ganska gammaldags, så det ska bli spännande att läsa nästa bok på engelska och se vad det ger för känsla. Jag har sett TV-serien innan och det var en hel del som skilde sig från den.

Boken är både intressant och bra skriven.

Lethal White

While Billy is obviously mentally distressed, and cannot remember many concrete details, there is something sincere about him and his story. But before Strike can question him further, Billy bolts from his office in a panic. Trying to get to the bottom of Billy's story, Strike and Robin Ellacott - once his assistant, now a partner in the agency - set off on a twisting trail that leads them through the backstreets of London, into a secretive inner sanctum within Parliament, and to a beautiful but sinister manor house deep in the countryside. And during this labyrinthine investigation, Strike's own life is far from straightforward: his newfound fame as a private eye means he can no longer operate behind the scenes as he once did. Plus, his relationship with his former assistant is more fraught than it ever has been - Robin is now invaluable to Strike in the business, but their personal relationship is much, much more tricky than that . . .

En riktig tegelsten, men varje sida var läsvärd. J.K har ett sätt att beskriva personer och miljöer som är väldigt fångande och underhållande. Jag blir verkligen engagerad i huvudpersonernas öden.

Children of the Revolution

A disgraced college lecturer is found murdered with £5,000 in his pocket on a disused railway line near his home. Since being dismissed from his job for sexual misconduct four years previously, he has been living a poverty-stricken and hermit-like existence in this isolated spot.

The suspects range from several individuals at the college where he used to teach to a woman who knew the victim back in the early '70s at Essex University, then a hotbed of political activism. When Banks receives a warning to step away from the case, he realises there is much more to the mystery than meets the eye - for there are plenty more skeletons to come out of the closet . . .

Watching the Dark

DCI Alan Banks reluctantly investigates DI Bill Quinn with Inspector Joanna Passero. Quinn, convalescing at St Peter’s Police Treatment Centre, was killed by a crossbow on the tranquil grounds, and left compromising photos. Quinn may be disreputable, linked to a vicious crime in Yorkshire and to a cold case – English Rachel Hewitt 19 vanished in Estonia six years ago.
